Bushfires have played an integral part in shaping the ecology of the Kangaroo Island landscape. Major fires have occurred in 2020, 2007, 1968,1958,1954,1953 and 1931 (when records began).
Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a privately owned fauna and flora conservancy. Since their founding in 1997 they have operated based on the principles of sustainable and regenerative tourism. The sanctuary is considered one of the best places in the world to observe a colony of healthy wild koalas thriving in the wild.
